United Airlines is introducing a feature that texts passengers live radar maps during weather delays. Using generative AI, the airline aims to provide real-time updates to help travelers understand how weather in one part of the country can impact their flights.

“With more people traveling this summer than ever, we wanted to give our customers an easier way to stay connected to real-time information about their flight and texting was the simplest solution,” Jason Birnbaum, United’s chief information officer, said in a statement. The radar maps will complement existing text alerts about gate changes, boarding times, and aircraft swaps.

The new features utilize AI to generate weather reports.

Passengers can also access weather maps in the airline’s app under flight status updates, and United plans to display radar maps in gate areas during weather-related delays.

This feature follows last year’s update to United’s app, allowing automatic rebooking and requests for meal, hotel, or ground transportation vouchers during significant delays or cancellations. The updates come as an “above normal” Atlantic Hurricane season begins, with Hurricane Beryl already affecting travel.

United’s app also offers turn-by-turn navigation inside airports to help passengers reach their gates more easily.
