South Korean prosecutors have decided to clear First Lady Kim Keon Hee, wife of President Yoon Suk Yeol, of any criminal charges related to receiving a luxury handbag under questionable circumstances. The Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office found no direct connection between the First Lady’s actions and Yoon’s official duties, nor any evidence of favors exchanged with the pastor who gifted the bag, which was valued at 3 million won ($2,250), according to a Yonhap News report.

The scandal caused an uproar in South Korea.

The investigation, which began in May after a secretly recorded video of the handbag exchange surfaced, caused a significant political stir and led to a decline in government support. Kim was questioned for 12 hours in July, marking the first time a sitting First Lady was summoned for questioning. Despite the controversy, both Kim and Yoon have consistently denied any wrongdoing, with Yoon apologizing in May for his wife’s “unwise behavior.”

The opposition Democratic Party has criticized the decision, with lawmaker Jo Seounglae calling for a special counsel probe to uncover the full truth. The handbag is likely to become part of national property, either being auctioned or stored in the presidential records.
