Three Ohio sisters inherited a rare dime, stored in a bank vault for over 40 years, and recently discovered its astonishing value. Struck by the U.S. Mint in San Francisco in 1975, the coin is one of only two known without the “S” mint mark, potentially fetching over $500,000 in an upcoming auction, according to Ian Russell, president of GreatCollections.

The family’s mother and brother bought the coin in 1978 for $18,200, viewing it as a financial safeguard. Their brother, who had long kept the coin hidden, passed away recently, leaving it to his sisters. They will remain anonymous due to the large sum involved.

Three sisters from Ohio inherited a highly rare dime, set to be auctioned in October.

Russell shared that most collectors had never seen one of these dimes, and it remained a mystery until recently. Now, the coin will be on display at a Tampa, Florida coin show before the auction concludes in October.

Although it’s unlikely more of these coins will be found, Russell expects renewed interest in the 1975 “proof” sets where they may appear.
