Joanna Hogg’s latest Miu Miu Women’s Tales short film, Autobiografia di una Borsetta, takes a unique approach by telling a story through the eyes of Miu Miu’s Wander bag. Set in Tuscany, the film follows the handbag’s journey through moments of joy, loss, and abandonment, using an elderly Italian woman’s narration to express its thoughts. The bag, once a prized possession, faces theft, neglect, and eventually lands in a police evidence box, offering a meditation on impermanence and fate.

British Director, Joanna Hogg.

Hogg embraced a minimalist, naturalistic style, shooting the film on four iPhone 16s and using different Wander bags to capture various perspectives. Rather than over-humanizing the object, she allowed the bag’s existence—shapeless yet enduring—to reflect on life’s unpredictability. Miu Miu’s ongoing film series, launched by Miuccia Prada in 2011, remains one of the few platforms exclusively commissioning female filmmakers, allowing them full creative freedom.

The film premieres at London’s Curzon Mayfair cinema and will later be available on Miu Miu’s digital channels and Mubi starting February 23. Hogg, known for The Souvenir and The Eternal Daughter, found the project liberating, saying it made her reconsider character expression in filmmaking. She also used the opportunity to critique the limited bag designs available for creatives, playfully urging Miu Miu to produce larger, more functional handbags.
