Haider Ackermann has been appointed creative director of Tom Ford, effective immediately. Ackermann replaces Peter Hawkings, who exited in July after just two seasons. Known for his precise tailoring and unique use of pastels, Ackermann has worked with Jean-Paul Gaultier and is currently the creative director at Canada Goose.

Ackermann takes the reins at Tom Ford with the support of the brand’s founder. “I have long been a great fan of Haider’s work,” said Tom Ford. Ackermann will oversee design from Paris while continuing his role at Canada Goose part-time. Zegna, which operates Tom Ford’s fashion business under a licensing deal with Estée Lauder, plans to expand the brand, including opening 50 retail stores and boosting its womenswear business.

Ackermann steps into the role amid a challenging time for the luxury sector, with slower growth in China and inflation impacting Western consumers. While Hawkings drew inspiration from late 90s nostalgia, Ackermann is expected to introduce more minimalist and radical updates to the brand.
