A multi-agency operation at the Los Angeles-Long Beach Seaport led to the seizure of 3,000 counterfeit Gibson guitars, valued at approximately $18 million if genuine. U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Homeland Security Investigations, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and Gibson Inc. announced the record-breaking confiscation during a press conference in Carson.

“These guitars may look real, but they are fraudulent,” said Africa Bell, port director, noting the fakes were likely bound for e-commerce markets. Displayed at the event were some of the counterfeit instruments mimicking the legendary Gibson brand, while others remained stacked in boxes.

Gibson’s Chief Marketing Officer, Beth Heidt, detailed how the knockoffs could be spotted by experts and professional guitarists. “The logo, inlays, finish, and weight are telltale signs,” Heidt explained. Counterfeit guitars also differ in craftsmanship, material, and sound quality.

Attorney Andrea Bates, representing Gibson, praised the collaboration that led to the seizure. “This is incredibly significant,” she said. Authorities did not disclose specifics about the counterfeit operation or its organizers, citing the ongoing investigation.
