Without a doubt, former Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek’s property has changed significantly. Located in Los Angeles’ scenic Fryman Canyon, Trebek’s property has been re-engineered from its previous status as a piece of land owned by Trebek for nearly 30 years to a new, sprawling contemporary estate on the market for $42 million. Trebek purchased the property in 1991, for $2.15 million. He lived on the property until 2020, and his estate sold the previous home, a 10,000-square-foot Mediterranean estate, in 2022 for $6.45 million. That home was demolished.
The new estate—a 20,000-square-foot home designed by Rob Diaz—employs textures and materials associated with the rustic aesthetic and juxtaposes these textures and materials with striking and defined architectural forms. Diaz described the design as a balance—a merging of some of the project’s natural elements, and some of the design’s sculptural elements.
Diaz was inspired by nature in the design, and used textures and materials associated with nature (cedar, natural stone, and copper) to tie the project to the site. Spatially, the bathtub is clad in raw wood and artisan millwork; the design is floor and fabric driven, creating an overall warm and inviting and lived in feel. Pendant lights in the shape of clouds hang above the great room. Bunks with built-in beds dominate the bunk room and sculpted wood staircases haloed the turn.
An Inside Look at the Reimagined Studio City Estate
The estate is comprised of a space for entertaining as well as casual living. The large dining hall measures perhaps 44 ft. x 66 ft. and includes a cathedral ceiling and an impressive stone fireplace. The space opens to a large, casual dining space and an open concept show kitchen and a second prep kitchen, an intricately carved marble bar, and several seating and lounge areas. The primary suite is comprised of a bedroom, lounge, dressing room, and a marble wardrobe/bathroom that opens to a private deck with views of the grounds.
The estate offers eight bedrooms, 12 bathrooms, and an additional staff unit. The estate offers several amenities to guests of the estate—home theater, gym, several offices and three kitchens across the property. The outdoor spaces elevate the home’s resort; there are two stone pavilions beside the pool. One of the pavilions is a luxurious bathhouse featuring a steam room, infrared sauna, cold plunge, and spa showers. The layered landscaping, garden, and design sensibilities of the residence showcase a study in form, function, and wellness architecture associated with Southern California.
